The fog of Shades of Death Road (bordering Jenny Jump State Forest in Warren County), which follows cars and leaves footprints on them; the winged, humanoid monsters of Littlefield who allegedly lived in the basement of two elderly spinsters; the ghosts of the huge Swedish Governor Printz and his friends, who burned down his former home, Printzhof (Printz Hall), shortly after a spectral party where the living caretaker was forced to play the violin (the foundations of Printzhof were rediscovered in 1937 in what is now Governor Printz Park in Essington, Tinicum Island and your best chance of seeing a repeat of the phantom revelry is on the evening of the autumnal equinox); the ghostly woman who walks the banks of the Rio Grande in Laredo, looking for the children that she pushed over a cliff into the river; the Baleroy Mansion's spirits, including Thomas Jefferson (don't sit in the cursed chair if you want to live); the well documented but mysterious Brown Mountain lights, believed by some to be connected with UFOs and alien abductions; the dwerg (dwarf) of John Coleman, a seaman with Hendrik Hudson (did Coleman not recover from his encounter with the Catskill gnomes and so remained a dwarf?), who still haunts the area near Donderberg (Thunder Mountain) on the Hudson River; paranormal phenomena at the historic Paradise Inn on the slopes of Mount Rainier; the camera loving spirits of Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Bedford, who appear unexpectedly on developed photographs; the unexplained geological mystery of the Devil's Kettle waterfall and pothole; the lion-headed serpent of the Wabash, seen at Huntington; the fierce, horned and spined Hodag that may dwell in the woods around Rhinelander; rumours that Elvis is alive and well, although somewhat older (even though his ghost has allegedly been seen in a number of places, including his Graceland mansion in Memphis); the Fairchid Oak of Ormond Beach, haunted my a male spectre, possibly a suicide; and strange phenomena at the Emily Morgan Hotel, near the Alamo in San Antonio (the Alamo itself is said by some to be the site of paranormal phenomena), are among the strange tales of the USA.

The girl in denims and tennis shoes, who sits on her own gravestone, in Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, Dayton; the light orb of Lenape Lane that chases people to Shades of Death Road (pray that the light does not turn red); the manifestation of the Virgin Mary to save her painting, which hung in St Mary's Immaculate Conception church in Johnstown, from the flood which devastated the city in 1889 (in 2013 it was donated by the Benedictine Sisters to the Johnstown Heritage Association and now hangs in the Grand Halle, on the site of the original church) (incidentally, a 1926 silent movie called The Johnstown Flood starred Janet Gaynor and featured Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard as extras); the horned, bat-winged Jersey Devil of the Pine Barrens, whose screams may be heard even if you are fortunate enough not to see it; the "melon heads" of Kirtland, similar to those of Connecticut and Michigan (I also suspect that the New York legend of swollen-headed Catskill gnomes owes its origin to melonheads); the invisible but tactile ghost at the Park Hotel in Hot Springs; Pecos Bill with his coyote family, his rattlesnake Shake (that served as his lasso) and his true love the catfish-riding Slue-Foot Sue (Neil Armstrong may have been the first MAN to set FOOT on the moon but Sue banged her HEAD on it many years earlier, after being thrown by Bill's appropriately named horse, Widow-Maker); tales of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine in the Superstitions; the little phantom girl who knocks on the door of Room 42 and the spectral madame of Room 33 who are among the ghosts of the San Remo Hotel, San Francisco; the Spook Light of the Devil's Promenade, near Joplin (is it a lantern held by a ghostly miner or headless Native American, or is it the spectral light of Native American lovers who died in a lover's pact?); alligators in the sewers of New York City, said to be the descendants of baby alligators flushed down toilets; the Richmond Vampire, popularly (and perhaps unfairly) associated with the tomb of William Wortham Pool in Holywood Cemetery, Richmond; the beautiful but sad Amanda, said to haunt Room 325 of the Vagabond Motel, San Diego; the fearsome snallygaster, a tentacled predatory bird or dragon that stalks the Blue Ridge Mountains; and the Dover Demon, possibly an ET, are more supernatural myths or scary stories of the United States of America.
