The Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon; the frog-like dwarves of Loveland; the giant serpent of Lake Michigan; the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified; appearances of the spiny goat-sucker, the chupacabra; paranormal phenomena at the historic Paradise Inn on the slopes of Mount Rainier; the playful blonde girl and the spirits of railway workers that haunt the Railroad House Inn in Marietta; the ghostly screams heard near the post office on the site of the hotel built by sadistic serial killer H H Holmes on West 63rd Street, Chicago; the batsquatch of Mount Saint Helens, that makes sasquatch seem mundane; the mischievious Pink Lady of Grove Park Inn, Asheville, who is a spirit but not a gin cocktail; the treasure chest of the Lebanon Valley, near Fort Indiantown Gap (sometimes called Indian Gap), protected by witches, blue fire, loud roars and, presumably, GIs (the treasure is gold hidden by the Doan brothers, British spies and outlaws of the revolutionary period, who were driven to crime when their father, a staunch Quaker, was physically branded and stripped of his property for refusing to support the war); tales of Casey Jones and his locomotive, the Cannonball Express (Jones was actually a real hero who died in a collision in Mississippi - his home is still preserved in Jackson); Santa Paula's horned, white and hairy anthropoid, the Billiwhack Monster; the apparition of Adam Bobel (Boebel) seen in Central House, Boscobel, the site of his hotel and where Gideons International was founded; and gigantic, aggressive thunderbirds, are among the strange tales of the USA.

The White Lady, Julia, who haunts Rolling Acres Road in appropriately named Lady Lake, along with a hooded phantom; the Dogman, encountered since the nineteenth century; the spectral woman who still supervises the Phoenix Inn oriental restaurant in Alhambra; the spooky goings on at the St Anthony Hotel, San Antonio, including phantom second-honeymooners who don't know when to stop; the mysteries of Fairy Hole cave, a Native American sacred site near Ghost Lake; the glowing male apparition of Baums Bridge Inn Bar & Restaurant in Kouts, which may be seen through a window (hope that it doesn't see you, though, as it can move with uncanny speed); not Dracula but Jutaculla (Judaculla), a slant-eyed giant that dwells in the caves of Devil's Courthouse and/or Tanasee Bald (Tannasee Bald) in the appropriately named Transylvania County (Tanasee Bald extends into Haywood County, where the bigfoot-like Boojum prowls); Oscar, the Beast of Busco, said to be a gigantic snapping turtle encountered near Churubusco; the Osage Native American ghostly wedding ceremony that is sometimes heard and occasionally seen, in the Bridal Cave of Thunder Mountain Park in Camdenton; the haunted swimming pool of Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra, where bathers have their legs grabbed by unseen hands (the nun in white, in the library, is more harmless); ghostly apparitions at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, formerly the Peabody Hotel; ghosts of the historic Hotel Attica in Attica, including an unwelcome back scratcher and a glowing spectre (are they the same spirit?); hauntings of the Crump Theatre in Columbus, including the spectre of a child, unexplained voices in the nursing area and the ghost of a man; the story of Indian fighter Bill Quick, who had ninety-nine human skulls displayed as trophies in his cabin near Kenton and, on his death bed, made his son Tom swear to add the hundredth, little knowing that the hundredth trophy in the cabin would be placed there by a Native American warrior and would be Tom's own skull (there certainly was a Tom Quick, notorious for killing Native Americans indiscriminately, and the legend probably grew from a desire to create justice in legend if not in reality); and the ghosts of a man, a woman and two children at the Mirabeau Park Hotel in Spokane Valley, are more supernatural myths or scary stories of the United States of America.
