The "spectral evidence" submitted at the Salem witch trials, supported by the "expertise" of that credulous chronicler, Cotton Mather (in witchcraft trials, if you could prove that you were elsewhere at the time of the alleged crime, it was actually held AGAINST you, as it was believed that one of your apparitions was a demonic spectre - "You were in two places at once, eh? Condemned out of your own mouth!"); the apparition of Adam Bobel (Boebel) seen in Central House, Boscobel, the site of his hotel and where Gideons International was founded; supernatural entities at Victoria's Black Swan Inn in San Antonio; the phantom guests of the Hotel San Carlos in Phoenix, including invisible happy children and the unhappy Leone Jensen, who leapt to her death in 1928; giant, lupine waheelas; paranormal phenomena in the Henry hotel (formerly the Ritz Carlton) in Dearborn; the ghost of Mr Pfister, who still walks his phantom dog, in the historic and pet friendly Pfister Hotel, in Milwaukee; mysteries of the Great Dismal Swamp, including a spectral raft with two occupants, illuminated by a bottle of fireflies, on Lake Drummond (the occupants are the ghosts of a man who went mad with grief and that of his lover, whose spirit the man desperately sought in the swamp); the spectral prisoners of Alcatraz; the mischievious, monkey-like argopelter that throws sticks at people; the alleged hauntings of the historic Excelsior House Hotel in Jefferson, including a light-fingered woman in black with a baby, a perfumed lady, a headless man and a boy who wakes people up to ask whether they want breakfast (it is even claimed that Steven Spielberg had a supernatural experience at the hotel, the guests of which have included Oscar Wilde and Ulysses S Grant; the Devil's Dance Chamber to the west of the Hudson River, where native Americans performed their divinatory dance rituals until the Manitou manifested himself as a wild animal; the haunted swimming pool of Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra, where bathers have their legs grabbed by unseen hands (the nun in white, in the library, is more harmless); the hatchet wielding Bunny Man (Bunnyman Ghost) of Colchester Overpass (Bunny Man Bridge) near Clifton; and the statue of little Gracie Watson in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, which is said to weep blood if anyone steals the presents which are sometimes left on her grave, are among the strange tales of the USA.

The monster of Wolf Pond, a thirty foot black serpent with yellow stripes and a green head; the thoroughfare popularly called Bloody Bucket Road and the similarly prefixed bridge and woods in Wauchula where, at night, blood appears in the water below the bridge and the sound of crying babies is heard from the woods (a murderous midwife is said to have been haunted by a bucket that supernaturally filled with the blood of her victims, which she tried to pour out at the bridge); the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified; the many ghosts of Elysian Park, Los Angeles, including a headless hound and a Lady in White; the face that appears if you gaze into a spring of the Great Balsam Mountains, which may not be your own but the hideous visage of a Cherokee woman, cursed by a manitou because of her flirtatiousness; the smelly and sasquatch-like Skunk Ape; the phantom of a weeping Native American woman who, on moonlit nights, repeats her death jump from a cliff in Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park (Creve Coeur Park), in St Louis County, where she tried to join her late husband in the spirit world; the lion-headed serpent of the Wabash, seen at Huntington; the beautiful but sad Amanda, said to haunt Room 325 of the Vagabond Motel, San Diego; giant, finned serpents, as well as spirits and a powerful manitou, in Devil's Lake (Da-wa-kah-char-gra) where the Ho-Chunk nation still celebrate their spiritual rites; the Prohibition era celebration that may still be heard in the Hotel Andra (once the Claremont) in Seattle; MoMo, the hairy, sasquatch-like Missouri Monster, that is believed to prey on the dogs of the town of Louisiana; the almost innumerable traditions, magical spells and superstitions of the Ozarks, some of which are recorded in Harold Bell Wright's novel The Shepherd of the Hills and in the John Wayne movie of the same name (though a rather different plot); Tahoe Tessie, Lake Tahoe's answer to Lake Champlain's Champ and to Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster; and the blue, brain-like ETs of Palos Verdes, are more supernatural myths or scary stories of the United States of America.
