Sights/Places to See and Attractions in Massachusetts

Faneuil Hall in Boston, where revolutionaries conspired; the frigate USS Constitution in Boston; the Old State House; the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; the Salem Witch Museum; the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod; Boston's Freedom Trail, taking in many landmarks; Old Sturbridge Village, where the lifestyle of the early nineteenth century can be appreciated; a recreation of the lifestyle of the Pilgrim Fathers and of Wampanoag Native Americans, as well as a reproduction of the Mayflower, at Plimouth Plantation, Plymouth; the Colonial houses of Deerfield; Old North Church, where silversmith Paul Revere began his famous ride; the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge; the idyllic island of Martha's Vineyard; The Salem Witch House, once the home of the infamous Judge Jonathan Corwin, who sat at witchcraft trials so bizarre, cruel and deadly that the governor of New York granted asylum to those accused who were fortunate enough to escape (the trials seemed so strange even for their era that a team of investigators was afterwards sent from England, where the execution of witches had ceased and where witchcraft executions on such a scale had not been seen for nearly half a century, during the chaos and puritanical insecurity of the English Civil War); the original House of Seven Gables in Salem; and Minute Man National Historical Park, are among the attractions of Massachusetts.

Folklore, Legends, Scary Stories, Myths, Ghosts and Monsters in Massachusetts

The alchemist who sought the elixir or life, in a turreted house at the junction of Essex and North Streets, in Salem; the supernatural sinking of the island where stands the Nix's Mate beacon, named after the ship's mate who cursed the island before being wrongly executed for killing Captain Nix; the Dover Demon, possibly an ET; the giant Maushope of Native American legend, who lived on Martha's Vineyard; the altar in Wizard's Glen near Dalton, where a hunter called John Chamberlain rescued a Native American girl who was to be sacrificed to the demons of the forest; tales of witchcraft and witch hunting, although the Salem witch trials are history, not legend; and the "spectral evidence" submitted at the Salem witch trials, supported by the "expertise" of that credulous chronicler, Cotton Mather (in witchcraft trials, if you could prove that you were elsewhere at the time of the alleged crime, it was actually held AGAINST you, as it was believed that one of your apparitions was a demonic spectre - "You were in two places at once, eh? Condemned out of your own mouth!"), are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Massachusetts.

Captain Alfred Bulltop Stormalong (Stormalong, A.B. geddit?), the gigantic captain of the massive ships Courser and Tuscarora, whose many adventures included life or death struggles with the deadly kraken; the sea serpents that have been seen around Cape Ann and Massachusetts Bay; speculation and rhymes about Lizzie Borden, acquitted of the axe murders of her parents (their home in Fall River, at the time of writing, is the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum, allegedly haunted and with an ouija board in the lounge); the spectre of the stubborn septuagenarian Giles Corey, which appears as a harbinger of disaster in Salem where, being pressed to death with weights over two days for refusing to plead to the charge of witchcraft, Corey merely shouted "more weight!" (although it was the only instance of pressing a man to death in New England history and cruel even for its time, Judge Corwin, whose house still stands in Salem, actually stood on Coreys chest, demanding that he plead); Spring Heel Jack (Spring Heeled Jack) who terrorised London, England, many years before emigrating to Cape Cod; the mounted spirits of Lafayette and Washington who keep watch over the grave of Satan, who was captured and killed by Shakers at Mount Sinai; the Roxbury pudding stones, said to be the remains of a giant's dessert, found near Boston; and the demon that finally clawed a retired pirate to death at Cape Cod, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Massachusetts.

    Home

You cannot claim to have seen the world unless you have travelled in the USA. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. New Orleans, Sacramento, Atlantic City, Savannah, New York, Las Vegas, Juneau, Chicago, Skagway, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, St Louis, Seattle, Kansas City, Sitka, Fairbanks, Detroit, Minneapolis, Anchorage, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Lake Tahoe, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Honolulu, Dallas, Boston, Corpus Christi, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and San Diego are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include The Disney resorts, Yellowstone National Park, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the Ozarks, rodeos, Yosemite National Park, the Everglades, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, Route 66, the Adirondacks, the Florida Keys, Mount Rushmore, the Appalachians, the California coastline, Glacier Bay National Park, the wild west town of Tombstone, the Okefenokee Swamp, Mount Rainier National Park, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, the beach at Waikiki in Hawaii and Bryce Canyon.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies.
