Attractions and Sights/Places to See in Ohio

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland; the stately Stan Hywet Hall and Garden in Akron; Cleveland Museum of Art; Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Garden in Columbus; the tomb of President McKinley in Canton; Fountain Square in Cincinnati; Chateau Laroche in Loveland; Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden; the art deco Cincinnati Museum Center; Glamorgan Castle in Alliance (now part of a school but tours are sometimes arranged); Cedar Point amusement park; and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, are among the attractions of Ohio.

Monsters, Legends, Scary Stories, Ghosts, Folklore and Myths in Ohio

The hauntings of Franklin Castle (a private residence, so do not linger), Cleveland, including a crying child and unexplained music (in spite of its name and reputation as Ohio's most haunted house, it looks to me like a typical Victorian dwelling); the Cry Baby Bridge in Norton, Akron, where at midnight the ghostly sight and sound of a mother throwing her baby into the river may be witnessed; the entrance to Hell created by Satanists at Satan's Hollow in Blue Ash, Cincinnati; the ghost of Mrs Squire in Squire's Castle near Cleveland; and the "melon heads" of Kirtland, similar to those of Connecticut and Michigan (I also suspect that the New York legend of swollen-headed Catskill gnomes owes its origin to melonheads), are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Ohio.

The frog-like dwarves of Loveland; the spectre of William H Morgan in Glamorgan Castle, Alliance; the story of Indian fighter Bill Quick, who had ninety-nine human skulls displayed as trophies in his cabin near Kenton and, on his death bed, made his son Tom swear to add the hundredth, little knowing that the hundredth trophy in the cabin would be placed there by a Native American warrior and would be Tom's own skull (there certainly was a Tom Quick, notorious for killing Native Americans indiscriminately, and the legend probably grew from a desire to create justice in legend if not in reality); the girl in denims and tennis shoes, who sits on her own gravestone, in Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, Dayton; the phantom lioness, usually heard rather than seen, who follows visitors in Cincinnati Zoo; and stories of Johnny Appleseed, a real nurseryman and missionary whose real name was John Chapman (he planted many apple nurseries in the Mohican area of Ohio), are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Ohio.

America is one of the largest, most most varied and most interesting countries in the world. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. St Louis, Phoenix, Kansas City, Sacramento, Sitka, Albuquerque, Houston, New Orleans, Salt Lake City, Detroit, Dallas, Corpus Christi, Honolulu, Santa Fe, Savannah, Atlanta, Skagway, Washington DC, Fort Lauderdale, Seattle, Indianapolis, San Diego, Boston, Anchorage, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Juneau, Lake Tahoe, New York, Miami, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Fairbanks, Minneapolis and Chicago are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include Niagara Falls, Yellowstone National Park, the California coastline, the Ozarks, the wild west town of Tombstone, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, Mount Rainier National Park, the Florida Keys, rodeos, the beach at Waikiki in Hawaii, Mount Rushmore, Yosemite National Park, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, Route 66, the Okefenokee Swamp, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, the Everglades, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Glacier Bay National Park, the Disney resorts, the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, the Adirondacks and the Appalachians.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies. From, a heartfelt Bon Voyage!
