Ghosts, Monsters, Folklore, Myths, Legends and Scary Stories in Florida

The phantom maid who makes a nuisance of herself in the historic St Francis Inn, St Augstine; the ghost "Vivian" who haunts the Hunter Arms Inn in St Cloud; ghostly apparitions at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, formerly the Peabody Hotel; the pink fog of Tomoka State Park that leaves behind only the dismembered skeletons of those it envelops; the phantom lighthouse keeper at the St Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; the Fairchid Oak of Ormond Beach, haunted my a male spectre, possibly a suicide; and the phantom of the Olde Marco Inn on Marco Island, are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Florida.

The White Lady, Julia, who haunts Rolling Acres Road in appropriately named Lady Lake, along with a hooded phantom; unusual hauntings of a Victorian guesthouse, Artist House, in Key West (the turret is said to be haunted, both by Anne, the wife of artist and author Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto and by the malevolent spirit of a sailor doll, also called Robert - the "possessed" doll itself is sometimes displayed in the Fort East Martello Museum or at the Old Post Office and Customhouse and is claimed to be the inpiration for the Chucky movies); hauntings at Ocean Key Resort and Spa, Key West; the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified; spirits of the Agustin Inn in the St Augustine Historic District, including a man in white, who walks through walls and who may also be the ghostly Chiles who "goes bump in the night"; the thoroughfare popularly called Bloody Bucket Road and the similarly prefixed bridge and woods in Wauchula where, at night, blood appears in the water below the bridge and the sound of crying babies is heard from the woods (a murderous midwife is said to have been haunted by a bucket that supernaturally filled with the blood of her victims, which she tried to pour out at the bridge); and the Fountain of Youth, searched for by the conquistador Ponce de Leon, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Florida.

The Wiccademous Grave of the atmospheric shrimping village Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island, where the spirit of a witch causes the earth to tremble; spectral lights and other mysterious phenomena at the Indian River Inn & Conference Center in New Smyrna; the toilet-lurking Two Striped Telamonia spider; strange phenomena at the historic Mary Phifer McKenzie House, part of the Sweetwater Branch Inn in Gainesville; the pink, horned, serpentine monster of the St John's River; sewer rats so huge that people have petted them like dogs; and the numerous ghosts of the Cassadaga Hotel, Cassadaga, which embraces its phantom guests and usually has a professional psychic on hand (spectres include girls Katlin and Sarah, Gentleman Jack with his trademark cigar and a rather naughty ghost called Arthur), are more weird folklore associated with Florida.

The smelly and sasquatch-like Skunk Ape; mysterious orbs and noises at the Historic Hollywood Beach Resort; the Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon; the spectre in a top hat that haunts the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in St Petersburg; the ghost of the Jameson Inn, quite modern but already haunted, on Cracker Barrel Drive in Crestview; the ghost of a former owner that haunts the Inn at New World Landing, Pensacola; Umatilla Cemetery with its screaming woman and phantom children; the ghosts of Miss Sunshine Gibson and Captain Wood in the historic, Cracker styled, Gibson Inn in Apalachicola; the gash-throated phantom of Luc Simone Aury that haunts the area outsde of the Amelia Island Museum of History, formerly the Old Jail where he was hanged, in Fernandina Beach (his attempt at suicide failed and his throat was stitched by a surgeon but the long drop of the gallows caused his wound to open and shower the horrified spectators with blood - Aury couldn't have planned it better if he had tried!); and unexplained phenomena at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami (ghostly events are associated with the fact that the hotel was used as a soldiers' hospital during WW2), are yet more strange folktales of Florida.

Birds, Reptiles, Mammals and other Wildlife / Fauna of Florida

Hawksbill turtles, Florida softshell turtles, rare Florida cougars (also called Florida panthers), feral nine-banded armadillos, raccoons, bald eagles, river otters, feral Rhesus monkeys on the Silver River, adding to Florida's atmosphere of subtropical paradise, feral Burmese pythons, leatherback turtles, American flamingos, muskrats, loggerhead turtles, endangered North Atlantic right whales, rare American crocodiles, pelicans, dolphins, marsh rabbits, green turtles, black bears, opossums, bobcats, feral parakeets, roseate spoonbills, manatees, gopher tortoises, alligators and white-tailed deer are among the wild animals of Florida.

So you want to see America. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. Indianapolis, Santa Fe, Savannah, Skagway, Sacramento, Washington DC, Lake Tahoe, Philadelphia, St Louis, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Houston, Corpus Christi, Miami, Honolulu, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Fairbanks, Boston, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, San Francisco, Juneau, Seattle, Anchorage, Dallas, Chicago, San Diego, Sitka, Albuquerque, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Kansas City and Detroit are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, the Florida Keys, the Adirondacks, rodeos, Mount Rainier National Park, Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the beach at Waikiki in Hawaii, Bryce Canyon, the Okefenokee Swamp, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, the California coastline, the Ozarks, the Everglades, Route 66, Glacier Bay National Park, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, the Disney resorts, Yosemite National Park, the wild west town of Tombstone, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta and the Appalachians.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies. We hope that you found today's Camelopard tip useful.
