Folklore, Monsters, Ghosts, Myths, Legends and Scary Stories in Florida

The ghost of a former owner that haunts the Inn at New World Landing, Pensacola; the toilet-lurking Two Striped Telamonia spider; the phantom lighthouse keeper at the St Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified; the White Lady, Julia, who haunts Rolling Acres Road in appropriately named Lady Lake, along with a hooded phantom; the phantom maid who makes a nuisance of herself in the historic St Francis Inn, St Augstine; and the Fairchid Oak of Ormond Beach, haunted my a male spectre, possibly a suicide, are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Florida.

The spectre in a top hat that haunts the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in St Petersburg; the ghost of the Jameson Inn, quite modern but already haunted, on Cracker Barrel Drive in Crestview; the pink fog of Tomoka State Park that leaves behind only the dismembered skeletons of those it envelops; mysterious orbs and noises at the Historic Hollywood Beach Resort; spectral lights and other mysterious phenomena at the Indian River Inn & Conference Center in New Smyrna; the Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon; and the Wiccademous Grave of the atmospheric shrimping village Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island, where the spirit of a witch causes the earth to tremble, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Florida.

Unusual hauntings of a Victorian guesthouse, Artist House, in Key West (the turret is said to be haunted, both by Anne, the wife of artist and author Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto and by the malevolent spirit of a sailor doll, also called Robert - the "possessed" doll itself is sometimes displayed in the Fort East Martello Museum or at the Old Post Office and Customhouse and is claimed to be the inpiration for the Chucky movies); the pink, horned, serpentine monster of the St John's River; the smelly and sasquatch-like Skunk Ape; the phantom of the Olde Marco Inn on Marco Island; hauntings at Ocean Key Resort and Spa, Key West; strange phenomena at the historic Mary Phifer McKenzie House, part of the Sweetwater Branch Inn in Gainesville; and the ghost "Vivian" who haunts the Hunter Arms Inn in St Cloud, are more weird folklore associated with Florida.

The Fountain of Youth, searched for by the conquistador Ponce de Leon; the thoroughfare popularly called Bloody Bucket Road and the similarly prefixed bridge and woods in Wauchula where, at night, blood appears in the water below the bridge and the sound of crying babies is heard from the woods (a murderous midwife is said to have been haunted by a bucket that supernaturally filled with the blood of her victims, which she tried to pour out at the bridge); ghostly apparitions at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, formerly the Peabody Hotel; unexplained phenomena at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami (ghostly events are associated with the fact that the hotel was used as a soldiers' hospital during WW2); Umatilla Cemetery with its screaming woman and phantom children; the gash-throated phantom of Luc Simone Aury that haunts the area outsde of the Amelia Island Museum of History, formerly the Old Jail where he was hanged, in Fernandina Beach (his attempt at suicide failed and his throat was stitched by a surgeon but the long drop of the gallows caused his wound to open and shower the horrified spectators with blood - Aury couldn't have planned it better if he had tried!); the numerous ghosts of the Cassadaga Hotel, Cassadaga, which embraces its phantom guests and usually has a professional psychic on hand (spectres include girls Katlin and Sarah, Gentleman Jack with his trademark cigar and a rather naughty ghost called Arthur); spirits of the Agustin Inn in the St Augustine Historic District, including a man in white, who walks through walls and who may also be the ghostly Chiles who "goes bump in the night"; the ghosts of Miss Sunshine Gibson and Captain Wood in the historic, Cracker styled, Gibson Inn in Apalachicola; and sewer rats so huge that people have petted them like dogs, are yet more strange folktales of Florida.

Reptiles, Birds, Mammals and other Wildlife / Fauna of Florida

Feral Rhesus monkeys on the Silver River, adding to Florida's atmosphere of subtropical paradise, feral nine-banded armadillos, hawksbill turtles, bobcats, marsh rabbits, leatherback turtles, alligators, loggerhead turtles, black bears, green turtles, roseate spoonbills, bald eagles, rare Florida cougars (also called Florida panthers), dolphins, endangered North Atlantic right whales, feral parakeets, rare American crocodiles, gopher tortoises, raccoons, river otters, Florida softshell turtles, feral Burmese pythons, manatees, American flamingos, opossums, pelicans, white-tailed deer and muskrats are among the wild animals of Florida.

America is one of the largest, most most varied and most interesting countries in the world. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. Phoenix, Seattle, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Albuquerque, Washington DC, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Fairbanks, New York, St Louis, Juneau, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans, Corpus Christi, Honolulu, Fort Lauderdale, Salt Lake City, Savannah, Santa Fe, Indianapolis, Skagway, Chicago, Boston, Anchorage, Houston, San Diego, Sacramento, Detroit, Atlantic City, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Sitka and Miami are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include Mount Rainier National Park, the Adirondacks, the Everglades, the California coastline, Yosemite National Park, the Okefenokee Swamp, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Bryce Canyon, the Florida Keys, rodeos, the wild west town of Tombstone, the beach at Waikiki in Hawaii, the Ozarks, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, Niagara Falls, Mount Rushmore, Route 66, Glacier Bay National Park, the Grand Canyon, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, the Disney resorts, the Appalachians and the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies. Camelopard suggests using well-known companies for your hotel reservations.
