Legends, Scary Stories, Myths, Monsters, Ghosts and Folklore in Ohio

The frog-like dwarves of Loveland; the ghost of Mrs Squire in Squire's Castle near Cleveland; the story of Indian fighter Bill Quick, who had ninety-nine human skulls displayed as trophies in his cabin near Kenton and, on his death bed, made his son Tom swear to add the hundredth, little knowing that the hundredth trophy in the cabin would be placed there by a Native American warrior and would be Tom's own skull (there certainly was a Tom Quick, notorious for killing Native Americans indiscriminately, and the legend probably grew from a desire to create justice in legend if not in reality); the "melon heads" of Kirtland, similar to those of Connecticut and Michigan (I also suspect that the New York legend of swollen-headed Catskill gnomes owes its origin to melonheads); and the entrance to Hell created by Satanists at Satan's Hollow in Blue Ash, Cincinnati, are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Ohio.

The hauntings of Franklin Castle (a private residence, so do not linger), Cleveland, including a crying child and unexplained music (in spite of its name and reputation as Ohio's most haunted house, it looks to me like a typical Victorian dwelling); the phantom lioness, usually heard rather than seen, who follows visitors in Cincinnati Zoo; stories of Johnny Appleseed, a real nurseryman and missionary whose real name was John Chapman (he planted many apple nurseries in the Mohican area of Ohio); the spectre of William H Morgan in Glamorgan Castle, Alliance; the girl in denims and tennis shoes, who sits on her own gravestone, in Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, Dayton; and the Cry Baby Bridge in Norton, Akron, where at midnight the ghostly sight and sound of a mother throwing her baby into the river may be witnessed, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Ohio.

Birds, Reptiles, Mammals and other Wildlife / Fauna of Ohio

Muskrats, Canada geese, red foxes, red squirrels, American badgers, coyotes, groundhogs (woodchucks), gray foxes, fox squirrels, prothonotary Warblers, loons, woodland jumping mice, gray squirrels, raccoons, increasing numbers of river otters, snow geese, Eastern chipmunks, minks, copperheads, Virginia opossums, nocturnal flying squirrels (rarely seen but actually the most common squirrels in Ohio), wild turkeys, Northern cardinals, turkey vultures, black-throated green warblers, beavers, bald eagles, a small number of black bears, white-tailed deer and meadow jumping mice are among the wild animals of Ohio.

The USA is one of the most developed and technologically advanced countries in the world, yet has preserved much of its wilderness and beautiful scenery. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. San Diego, Sacramento, Honolulu, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Miami, Salt Lake City, Savannah, Skagway, Chicago, Seattle, Fairbanks, Las Vegas, Boston, New Orleans, San Francisco, Albuquerque, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, St Louis, Fort Lauderdale, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Juneau, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Houston, Anchorage, Lake Tahoe, Detroit, Santa Fe, Sitka and Phoenix are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include Niagara Falls, Route 66, Bryce Canyon, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, the California coastline, the Everglades, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, the Ozarks, the Adirondacks, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rainier National Park, the wild west town of Tombstone, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, the Appalachians, Mount Rushmore, the Okefenokee Swamp, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, the Disney resorts, the Florida Keys, Yosemite National Park, the beach at Waikiki in Hawaii, the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta, Yellowstone National Park, rodeos and Glacier Bay National Park.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies. We hope that you found today's Camelopard tip useful.
