Ghosts, Legends, Monsters, Folklore, Myths and Scary Stories in Florida

The ghosts of Miss Sunshine Gibson and Captain Wood in the historic, Cracker styled, Gibson Inn in Apalachicola; mysterious orbs and noises at the Historic Hollywood Beach Resort; the ghost "Vivian" who haunts the Hunter Arms Inn in St Cloud; the smelly and sasquatch-like Skunk Ape; unusual hauntings of a Victorian guesthouse, Artist House, in Key West (the turret is said to be haunted, both by Anne, the wife of artist and author Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto and by the malevolent spirit of a sailor doll, also called Robert - the "possessed" doll itself is sometimes displayed in the Fort East Martello Museum or at the Old Post Office and Customhouse and is claimed to be the inpiration for the Chucky movies); spectral lights and other mysterious phenomena at the Indian River Inn & Conference Center in New Smyrna; and the Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon, are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Florida.

The Fairchid Oak of Ormond Beach, haunted my a male spectre, possibly a suicide; the toilet-lurking Two Striped Telamonia spider; spirits of the Agustin Inn in the St Augustine Historic District, including a man in white, who walks through walls and who may also be the ghostly Chiles who "goes bump in the night"; the gash-throated phantom of Luc Simone Aury that haunts the area outsde of the Amelia Island Museum of History, formerly the Old Jail where he was hanged, in Fernandina Beach (his attempt at suicide failed and his throat was stitched by a surgeon but the long drop of the gallows caused his wound to open and shower the horrified spectators with blood - Aury couldn't have planned it better if he had tried!); Umatilla Cemetery with its screaming woman and phantom children; the pink fog of Tomoka State Park that leaves behind only the dismembered skeletons of those it envelops; and the ghost of a former owner that haunts the Inn at New World Landing, Pensacola, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Florida.

Strange phenomena at the historic Mary Phifer McKenzie House, part of the Sweetwater Branch Inn in Gainesville; the ghost of the Jameson Inn, quite modern but already haunted, on Cracker Barrel Drive in Crestview; the pink, horned, serpentine monster of the St John's River; hauntings at Ocean Key Resort and Spa, Key West; the White Lady, Julia, who haunts Rolling Acres Road in appropriately named Lady Lake, along with a hooded phantom; the phantom maid who makes a nuisance of herself in the historic St Francis Inn, St Augstine; and ghostly apparitions at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, formerly the Peabody Hotel, are more weird folklore associated with Florida.

The numerous ghosts of the Cassadaga Hotel, Cassadaga, which embraces its phantom guests and usually has a professional psychic on hand (spectres include girls Katlin and Sarah, Gentleman Jack with his trademark cigar and a rather naughty ghost called Arthur); the spectre in a top hat that haunts the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in St Petersburg; sewer rats so huge that people have petted them like dogs; the phantom lighthouse keeper at the St Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; the Fountain of Youth, searched for by the conquistador Ponce de Leon; the thoroughfare popularly called Bloody Bucket Road and the similarly prefixed bridge and woods in Wauchula where, at night, blood appears in the water below the bridge and the sound of crying babies is heard from the woods (a murderous midwife is said to have been haunted by a bucket that supernaturally filled with the blood of her victims, which she tried to pour out at the bridge); unexplained phenomena at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami (ghostly events are associated with the fact that the hotel was used as a soldiers' hospital during WW2); the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified; the phantom of the Olde Marco Inn on Marco Island; and the Wiccademous Grave of the atmospheric shrimping village Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island, where the spirit of a witch causes the earth to tremble, are yet more strange folktales of Florida.

National Forests, State Forests, State Parks, National Parks, Nature Reserves and Refuges in Florida

You cannot claim to have seen the world unless you have travelled in the USA. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. San Francisco, Albuquerque, Boston, Sacramento, Phoenix, Seattle, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Fairbanks, Sitka, Chicago, Skagway, New Orleans, Lake Tahoe, Detroit, San Diego, Atlanta, Washington DC, Honolulu, Anchorage, Indianapolis, Savannah, New York, Juneau, Santa Fe, Atlantic City, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Houston, Corpus Christi, St Louis, Los Angeles, Dallas and Philadelphia are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include The beach at Waikiki in Hawaii, Bryce Canyon, the California coastline, the Grand Canyon, the Appalachians, the wild west town of Tombstone, the Everglades, Glacier Bay National Park, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, Niagara Falls, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, the Okefenokee Swamp, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, rodeos, the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta, Route 66, the Adirondacks, the Florida Keys, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, Mount Rushmore, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, Mount Rainier National Park, the Ozarks and the Disney resorts.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies.
