Ghosts, Monsters, Legends, Scary Stories, Myths and Folklore in Florida

The pink fog of Tomoka State Park that leaves behind only the dismembered skeletons of those it envelops; sewer rats so huge that people have petted them like dogs; the White Lady, Julia, who haunts Rolling Acres Road in appropriately named Lady Lake, along with a hooded phantom; the gash-throated phantom of Luc Simone Aury that haunts the area outsde of the Amelia Island Museum of History, formerly the Old Jail where he was hanged, in Fernandina Beach (his attempt at suicide failed and his throat was stitched by a surgeon but the long drop of the gallows caused his wound to open and shower the horrified spectators with blood - Aury couldn't have planned it better if he had tried!); the ghost "Vivian" who haunts the Hunter Arms Inn in St Cloud; the ghost of a former owner that haunts the Inn at New World Landing, Pensacola; and the Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon, are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Florida.

The pink, horned, serpentine monster of the St John's River; the toilet-lurking Two Striped Telamonia spider; the spectre in a top hat that haunts the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in St Petersburg; the phantom of the Olde Marco Inn on Marco Island; the numerous ghosts of the Cassadaga Hotel, Cassadaga, which embraces its phantom guests and usually has a professional psychic on hand (spectres include girls Katlin and Sarah, Gentleman Jack with his trademark cigar and a rather naughty ghost called Arthur); the smelly and sasquatch-like Skunk Ape; and the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Florida.

The Wiccademous Grave of the atmospheric shrimping village Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island, where the spirit of a witch causes the earth to tremble; unusual hauntings of a Victorian guesthouse, Artist House, in Key West (the turret is said to be haunted, both by Anne, the wife of artist and author Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto and by the malevolent spirit of a sailor doll, also called Robert - the "possessed" doll itself is sometimes displayed in the Fort East Martello Museum or at the Old Post Office and Customhouse and is claimed to be the inpiration for the Chucky movies); the ghost of the Jameson Inn, quite modern but already haunted, on Cracker Barrel Drive in Crestview; the Fountain of Youth, searched for by the conquistador Ponce de Leon; spectral lights and other mysterious phenomena at the Indian River Inn & Conference Center in New Smyrna; strange phenomena at the historic Mary Phifer McKenzie House, part of the Sweetwater Branch Inn in Gainesville; and spirits of the Agustin Inn in the St Augustine Historic District, including a man in white, who walks through walls and who may also be the ghostly Chiles who "goes bump in the night", are more weird folklore associated with Florida.

The ghosts of Miss Sunshine Gibson and Captain Wood in the historic, Cracker styled, Gibson Inn in Apalachicola; unexplained phenomena at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami (ghostly events are associated with the fact that the hotel was used as a soldiers' hospital during WW2); hauntings at Ocean Key Resort and Spa, Key West; mysterious orbs and noises at the Historic Hollywood Beach Resort; the thoroughfare popularly called Bloody Bucket Road and the similarly prefixed bridge and woods in Wauchula where, at night, blood appears in the water below the bridge and the sound of crying babies is heard from the woods (a murderous midwife is said to have been haunted by a bucket that supernaturally filled with the blood of her victims, which she tried to pour out at the bridge); the phantom maid who makes a nuisance of herself in the historic St Francis Inn, St Augstine; the phantom lighthouse keeper at the St Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; Umatilla Cemetery with its screaming woman and phantom children; ghostly apparitions at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, formerly the Peabody Hotel; and the Fairchid Oak of Ormond Beach, haunted my a male spectre, possibly a suicide, are yet more strange folktales of Florida.

Mammals, Birds, Reptiles and other Wildlife / Fauna of Florida

River otters, feral Burmese pythons, pelicans, dolphins, black bears, feral nine-banded armadillos, bald eagles, American flamingos, opossums, endangered North Atlantic right whales, roseate spoonbills, hawksbill turtles, leatherback turtles, manatees, raccoons, gopher tortoises, green turtles, feral Rhesus monkeys on the Silver River, adding to Florida's atmosphere of subtropical paradise, muskrats, rare Florida cougars (also called Florida panthers), alligators, feral parakeets, white-tailed deer, rare American crocodiles, loggerhead turtles, Florida softshell turtles, marsh rabbits and bobcats are among the wild animals of Florida.

    Home

Welcome to the United States. Being familiar with the USA is as important in the modern Grand Tour as familiarity with Europe. Houston, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, Corpus Christi, Seattle, St Louis, Santa Fe, Chicago, Detroit, Sitka, Albuquerque, Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Anchorage, Atlanta, Boston, Kansas City, Honolulu, New York, Savannah, Sacramento, Fairbanks, Washington DC, Indianapolis, Juneau, Minneapolis, Phoenix, New Orleans, Dallas, Miami, Atlantic City and Skagway are among the most famous cities in the USA. Other American mainland sites that should not be missed if a visitor to America, or an American for that matter, is to be regarded as well travelled, include Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone National Park, the Adirondacks, Hawaiian volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, the Grand Canyon, the plantations and bayous of the Mississippi Delta, Mount McKinley and fabulous wildlife in Denali National Park, the Everglades, Yosemite National Park, Native American nations such as the Navajo and the Hopi, the Florida Keys, Bryce Canyon, rodeos, the Okefenokee Swamp, the California coastline, the Ozarks, the Appalachians, Marvellous scenery and sea life in Kenai Fjords National Park, the wild west town of Tombstone, the beach at Waikiki in Hawaii, the Disney resorts, Glacier Bay National Park, Niagara Falls, the Arctic wilderness of Alaska, Mount Rainier National Park and Route 66.

The United States of America are so enormous that even most Americans cannot "know" all of their own country. Even visiting every state would be a major undertaking. It is possible, however, to visit the iconic places known all over the world, especially through Hollywood movies.
