Ghosts, Folklore, Legends, Myths, Monsters and Scary Stories in Florida

The Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon; unusual hauntings of a Victorian guesthouse, Artist House, in Key West (the turret is said to be haunted, both by Anne, the wife of artist and author Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto and by the malevolent spirit of a sailor doll, also called Robert - the "possessed" doll itself is sometimes displayed in the Fort East Martello Museum or at the Old Post Office and Customhouse and is claimed to be the inpiration for the Chucky movies); the toilet-lurking Two Striped Telamonia spider; hauntings at Ocean Key Resort and Spa, Key West; spirits of the Agustin Inn in the St Augustine Historic District, including a man in white, who walks through walls and who may also be the ghostly Chiles who "goes bump in the night"; the Fountain of Youth, searched for by the conquistador Ponce de Leon; and spectral lights and other mysterious phenomena at the Indian River Inn & Conference Center in New Smyrna, are among the true ghost stories, myths and legends of Florida.

The White Lady, Julia, who haunts Rolling Acres Road in appropriately named Lady Lake, along with a hooded phantom; the ghost of the Jameson Inn, quite modern but already haunted, on Cracker Barrel Drive in Crestview; the ghosts of Miss Sunshine Gibson and Captain Wood in the historic, Cracker styled, Gibson Inn in Apalachicola; strange phenomena at the historic Mary Phifer McKenzie House, part of the Sweetwater Branch Inn in Gainesville; the phantom of the Olde Marco Inn on Marco Island; the pink fog of Tomoka State Park that leaves behind only the dismembered skeletons of those it envelops; and the spectre in a top hat that haunts the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in St Petersburg, are other legendary tales of ghosts and haunted places in Florida.

The ghost of a former owner that haunts the Inn at New World Landing, Pensacola; the smelly and sasquatch-like Skunk Ape; the Saint Augustine Monster, a real carcass that has never been positively identified; ghostly apparitions at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, formerly the Peabody Hotel; sewer rats so huge that people have petted them like dogs; the phantom lighthouse keeper at the St Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; and the thoroughfare popularly called Bloody Bucket Road and the similarly prefixed bridge and woods in Wauchula where, at night, blood appears in the water below the bridge and the sound of crying babies is heard from the woods (a murderous midwife is said to have been haunted by a bucket that supernaturally filled with the blood of her victims, which she tried to pour out at the bridge), are more weird folklore associated with Florida.

Unexplained phenomena at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami (ghostly events are associated with the fact that the hotel was used as a soldiers' hospital during WW2); Umatilla Cemetery with its screaming woman and phantom children; the phantom maid who makes a nuisance of herself in the historic St Francis Inn, St Augstine; the Fairchid Oak of Ormond Beach, haunted my a male spectre, possibly a suicide; the ghost "Vivian" who haunts the Hunter Arms Inn in St Cloud; the gash-throated phantom of Luc Simone Aury that haunts the area outsde of the Amelia Island Museum of History, formerly the Old Jail where he was hanged, in Fernandina Beach (his attempt at suicide failed and his throat was stitched by a surgeon but the long drop of the gallows caused his wound to open and shower the horrified spectators with blood - Aury couldn't have planned it better if he had tried!); the numerous ghosts of the Cassadaga Hotel, Cassadaga, which embraces its phantom guests and usually has a professional psychic on hand (spectres include girls Katlin and Sarah, Gentleman Jack with his trademark cigar and a rather naughty ghost called Arthur); mysterious orbs and noises at the Historic Hollywood Beach Resort; the Wiccademous Grave of the atmospheric shrimping village Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island, where the spirit of a witch causes the earth to tremble; and the pink, horned, serpentine monster of the St John's River, are yet more strange folktales of Florida.

National Forests, State Forests, Nature Reserves, National Parks, State Parks and Refuges in Florida

Osceola National Forest where the Skunk Ape is said to have been seen; the 607 square mile Ocala National Forest; the 2500 square mile Everglades National Park, home of alligators, American crocodiles, Florida cougars, black bears, American flamingos and much more; Manatee Springs State Park, the main attraction of which you can guess; J.N.
